What is the Bell of Mindfulness?

The Bell of Mindfulness helps students pause, breathe, and reset during a busy school day. When students hear the bell, it is a reminder to bring their attention back to their body, breath, and mind.

Breathing is a great way to practice mindfulness because we always have our breath with us. Taking a few mindful breaths gives the brain and body oxygen, which can help students feel calmer, more focused, and more in control.

How to Use It

Set the timer to your desired interval. You can also invite the bell at any time using the button above, or use a physical bell on your desk.

When students hear the bell, invite them to practice Three Mindful Breaths:

1

Everyone pauses what they are doing.

2

Take three slow breaths in and out.

3

Notice the breath as it enters and leaves the body. Notice the brief pause between your outbreath and inbreath.

4

Students can focus on the cool air coming in through their nose and the warmer air going out, or they can notice their belly rising and falling with each breath.

5

When students finish their three breaths, they raise their hand quietly. This lets the teacher know they are ready and helps everyone respect the mindful pause.

This quick brain break can help students refocus, calm their bodies, and regulate their attention before returning to learning.
